Denver Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds is “shaken up” after being shot last Friday in Glendale, Colorado, head coach Sean Payton told reporters.

“He’s fortunate… I’ve had the chance to talk with him, and he’s pretty shaken up, and I’ll leave it at that,” Payton said after the Broncos’ Friday practice.

Payton added that counseling was available for Broncos players.

Reynolds has been on IR since undergoing finger surgery earlier this month. He joined the Broncos for team activities this week, ESPN’s Jeff Legwold reported.

Police documents indicated that Reynolds was shot in the left arm and the back of the head outside a strip club early Friday morning, per Legwold.

The Broncos said in a statement on Thursday that Reynolds “received treatment for minor injuries.”

“Out of respect for the legal process, we will defer further comment on this matter to the authorities,” the team said.

Payton told reporters on Friday that the NFL and local authorities are “handling” the incident.

The Denver police announced on Wednesday that they had arrested Burr Charlesworth and Luis Mendoza in connection to the case, but were still “working to identify additional possible suspects.”

According to Legwold, Reynolds left the club in an SUV with two other men, at which point they “were followed by multiple vehicles and shots were fired.”

The party told police they were followed onto the highway and at one point were pursued by four vehicles before the car stopped working and they fled on foot, Janet Oravetz, Kevin Vaughan and Mike Klis reported for 9News.

The police stated that two men, one of which was later identified as Reynolds, were brought to the hospital “for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries” after the incident.

The shooting occurred on the same night as the Broncos’ Week 7 game in New Orleans. Reynolds did not travel with the team due his position on the IR, as noted by the AP’s Arnie Melendrez Stapleton.

According to Stapleton, Reynolds has been “working out on a side field” during Broncos practices heading into Week 8.

Reynolds signed a two-year, $9 million contract to join the Broncos this offseason. He recorded 12 catches for 183 yards and a touchdown prior to suffering his finger injury in Week 5, and had previously been listed on the injury report with an Achilles injury.
