Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has been handed a three-game suspension following an altercation with a reporter that occurred over the weekend. The NBA announced the suspension on Tuesday, stating that Embiid was being disciplined for “shoving a member of the media” after the Sixers’ game against the Memphis Grizzlies at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night.
The league’s decision to suspend Embiid was explained by NBA executive Joe Dumars, who emphasized the importance of professionalism in player-media interactions. “Mutual respect is paramount to the relationship between players and media in the NBA,” Dumars said in an official statement. “While we understand Joel was offended by the personal nature of the original version of the reporter’s column, interactions must remain professional on both sides and can never turn physical.”
The reporter involved in the incident was Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Embiid’s frustration with Hayes stemmed from an article the reporter wrote earlier this season, which included personal references to Embiid’s late brother, Arthur, as well as his young son.
The piece criticized Embiid for supposedly being out of shape, and the inclusion of such sensitive personal information led to widespread backlash against Hayes. The situation came to a head on Saturday night when Embiid confronted the reporter, resulting in a physical shove that has now led to league-imposed consequences.

This incident adds to what has already been a tumultuous start to the 2024-25 season for Embiid, who has yet to make his debut this year. Recently, the NBA launched an investigation into the Philadelphia 76ers over the unclear status of Embiid’s injury, eventually resulting in a hefty fine for the organization.
Now, with this suspension, Embiid faces more consequences as he will be forced to miss three games and forfeit a portion of his salary.
The suspension has sparked debates across the league, with many fans and analysts weighing in on both the appropriateness of Hayes’ original article and Embiid’s reaction.
While some have expressed sympathy for Embiid, given the personal nature of the criticism, others argue that physical altercations are never acceptable, especially from a player of his stature. Regardless of the opinions, the incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance that exists between the media and athletes in the spotlight.
Embiid’s absence for the next three games is expected to have a significant impact on the 76ers as they navigate the early stages of the season without their franchise player.
With both the organization and Embiid already facing scrutiny, all eyes will be on the Sixers as they attempt to move forward from the controversy and regain stability on and off the court.
