Dan Hooker has shared some insightful thoughts about facing Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, two of the toughest fighters in the lightweight division. Hooker, who has faced Makhachev in the octagon, revealed why these fighters are such a massive challenge for their opponents, beyond just their physical skills.

The 34-year-old fighter reflected on his experience at UFC 267, where he went up against Makhachev. The Russian fighter made quick work of Hooker with a first-round submission victory, showcasing his dominant grappling. Makhachev’s subsequent victories over Bobby Green and Charles Oliveira, which earned him the lightweight championship, only solidified his reputation as a force to be reckoned with.

Speaking on Submission Radio, Hooker explained that it’s not just Makhachev’s technique that makes him difficult to beat, but the myth and hype surrounding his abilities. According to Hooker, this exaggerated aura of invincibility often causes opponents to hesitate rather than engage aggressively, giving Makhachev the psychological advantage before the fight even begins. The “myth” of these fighters, Hooker believes, plays a huge role in the challenges they pose in the octagon.

Hooker didn’t stop there, also discussing Makhachev’s upcoming rematch with Arman Tsarukyan. He predicted that Tsarukyan could pose an intriguing challenge, but ultimately believes Makhachev will stick to his gameplan and successfully defend his title.

For Hooker, the mental aspect of fighting these highly hyped athletes is just as tough, if not tougher, than the physical battles inside the cage. The “myth” surrounding them makes it all the more difficult for opponents to fight their best.

As the lightweight division continues to heat up, Hooker’s insights into the mental and physical challenges of fighting the likes of Khabib and Makhachev remind fans just how important mindset is in the fight game.
