Baker Mayfield cleared the air on why he copied Tommy DeVito’s celebration in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 30-7 win over the New York Giants.With time running out in the second quarter, Mayfield rushed into the end zone for a 10-yard score and while doing so, he was met with heavy resistance from the Giants defense. Instead of being taken down, Mayfield hurdled over the defenders, landing in the end zone.Though the ball squirted out of his hands after his rough landing, the score was called good, which led to Mayfield aggressively pumping his hands up and down with this fingers pinched. The fans love him here so paying a little tribute to him.”Speaking with reporters, Mayfield admitted that him taking DeVito’s celebration was just off the cuff and that his decision to do so was not meant to be taken with any sort malice. “[It was] a tribute to Tommy,” the 29-year-old told reporters after the win.”He’s a good dude – He’s got swag.” When asked if it was his idea to do the celebration, Mayfield admitted it just happened, stating: “Oh, I have no idea. I just see him do it. You know, most of the time I don’t know what I’m going to do so there’s spontaneous stuff. It is what it is. Kinda happened last year, I mean it’s going to happen I guess.”Additionally, DeVito was the recipient of a heavy sack in the first quarter of the game. As DeVito avoided a sack from Christian Izien, he was immediately intercepted by Calijah Kancey, who brought him down to the grass with a heavy hit, which many called the hardest sack of the season.After the game, the 26-year-old explained how the hit wasn’t too bad for him, especially as he began to get back into the swing of things after Daniel Jones’ release from the team. “First time being out there in a while, playing real football again since preseason so probably going to take some time to get adjusted a little bit to getting hit again but I’ll be OK,” he shared with reporters.Overall, Mayfield completed 24-of-30 pass attempts for 294 yards with one rushing touchdown. DeVito completed 21-of-31 passes for 189 yards with no touchdowns
