To say it’s been a tough season for the New York Giants would be an understatement. The New Jersey-based outfit has won just two games this term and released its franchise quarterback Daniel Jones during the week, despite handing him a four-year, $160 million contract just 20 months ago. That left Tommy DeVito, the New Jersey native who stood in for the injured Jones last season and became a cult hero in New York, to play in Sundays game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium. It was hoped the change would spark the Giants back into life, but it wasnt to be. The hosts were outclassed by the Bucs – a team with a losing record – and their QB Baker Mayfield. As Mayfield led his side to a 30-0 lead, DeVito struggled to gain any momentum. The latters first drive summed up New Yorks dire day, as he was brutally sacked on the third down.Tommy DeVito quickly learns what Daniel Jones went through after Giants starting QB changeBaker Mayfield adds to Giants embarrassment with ruthless Tommy DeVito celebrationThe discontent among booing Giants fans was clear. “Are we ever gonna score in this dump?” Shouted one grumbled New Yorker after another failed drive. The weathered fan was wearing Eli Manning’s iconic No. 10 Jersey, perhaps dreaming of halcyon days when Giants Stadium stood tall and touchdowns were aplenty.Moments later, three gleeful Bucs fans uttered some inaudible words to three departing locals, probably pouring salt into a gaping wound. “Arch Manning 2026,” replied one of the Giants fans in response, a reference to Eli’s promising 19-year-old nephew who’s developing nicely at Texas. Arch will be eligible for the NFL Draft in 2026.It would be naive to assume talent alone is driving the excitement around Arch. Yes, hes an exciting prospect, but he’s still the back up to Quinn Ewers. The clamor for Arch among Giants fans is mainly due to the fact hes related to the great Eli, the man who did the seemingly impossible and stop Tom Bradys 18-0 New England Patriots at Super Bowl XLII.Giants fans want Arch Manning in New York ( Image: Getty Images)Elis Giants defeated New England and Brady again four years later at Super Bowl XLVI, which remains the last time a men’s New York team has won one of Americas big four championships (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL).Giants fans eventually had something to cheer in the fourth quarter when DeVito rushed to the one-yard line, resulting in a touchdown seconds later. Yet by that point, the stadium was half empty. The only other joyous moments for the locals was when a man in a Dallas Cowboys jersey rocked up. The chant “Cowboys suck” came from all directions as the oddly-dressed fellow tried to laugh it off. And New Yorkers should know a bad team when they see one, considering the state of the 3-8 Jets and 2-9 Giants. The game finished 30-7 to the Bucs in a near-empty arena. A tough afternoon for the Giants, a franchise that has a long way to go to reach the top again.
