CNN anchor Jake Tapper demanded his show back in an awkward on-air moment while reporting on the meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The presenter had been reporting live from Anchorage, Alaska, during the crucial meeting between the two heads of states on Friday, August 15. The tense meeting devolved into chaos during the photo call, as reporters threw tough questions at the Russian President. Jake Tapper had been covering the meeting live and had broken for a commercial break.
On returning, the channel switched to Anderson Cooper in New York, who attempted to pass coverage back to Tapper. But, unaware he was back on the air, Tapper was heard complaining, “I’m fine, just give me my show back.”
From the studio, Cooper smiled and joked, “Your show’s back!” Tapper began interviewing California Senator Adam Schiff, despite being flustered at the interruption.
The interview continued to go downhill when Schiff told Tapper he had “lost” him during the interview. “We’re having real comms problems today, I’m sorry about that. If anybody can hear me, let’s throw it back to New York,” Tapper said before the channel switched back to Cooper.
But it wasn’t the only press mishap during the talks. Despite appearing cool as can be during the photo call between the two Presidents, Putin appeared to shout over reporters when questions started flying his way. One reporter asked, “How can the US trust your word? Will you stop killing?”
Putin appeared to shout over the reporters before the camera feed was suddenly cut. The exchange happened in a packed media room with cameras rolling. Putin had already been heckled by the press while on the tarmac as reporters asked if he was “ready to stop killing civilians.”
Donald Trump told press following the talks that he and Putin had an “understanding” and that they agreed on many points but disagreed on many, including what he said was a major point. The meeting did not result in an agreement about ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. Overall, Trump gave the summit, of which no precise details have been released, “a 10.”
He also seemed to assign the responsibility of achieving a ceasefire agreement to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was not invited to the Alaskan summit on Friday. “Now it’s really up to President Zelensky to get it done,” Trump said.
