Aaron Rodgers miserable season reached another new low after he broke an unwanted Tom Brady record, but the veteran quarterback attempted to raise a smile.
The 41-year-old has endured a season to forget with the New York Jets on a woeful run of form that has left them with one of the worst records in the division. After winning two of their first three NFL games of the season, the Jets have won just twice in 13 games, seeing their record tumble to 4-12 with their postseason chances scrapped weeks ago.
Rodgers personal campaign also reached a new low during the embarrassing defeat against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday as he was pulled from the game in the fourth quarter with the Jets trailing 40-0. The veteran was replaced by Tyrod Taylor, who threw two touchdowns to salvage some pride in the 40-12 defeat.
The veteran was withdrawn by Jeff Ulbrich after telling his head coach to replace him with Taylor. “It was 33-0 and I said at some point, you wanna go to Tyrod here?” Rodgers revealed. “The next play they threw a screen for a touchdown and it was 40-0.” Rodgers went 12-18 for 112 yards and two interceptions and was sacked four times to bring his career total to 568, passing Bradys unwanted record of 565 in the process to become the most-sacked quarterback in NFL history.
Rodgers was told of his unwelcome slice of history following the game to add more misery to a wretched game and season for the Super Bowl XLV MVP. However, Rodgers attempted to take the news in good faith as he quipped: Yeah, I got Tom on that, he replied with a weak smile.
The undesirable records unfortunately didnt end there for Rodgers with the game the first time in his illustrious career that his team had faced a 40-point deficit in a game he started. The season began with Super Bowl aspirations but has dramatically fallen away as the campaign took shape.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s kind of like the season — it just got away from us,” said Rodgers, who recorded a 1.2 total quarterback rating, the lowest of his career. “Too many games got away from us. This game got away from us. We were moving the ball well, and then we just hit a wall. And that’s been kind of the season too.”
Rodgers future with the Jets and in the league is uncertain amid speculation that he could depart the Jets in the offseason. When asked whether owner Woody Johnson would want to retain him for next season after his poor performances and team form, Rodgers simply replied: You should ask Woody.
