The New York Giants are hoping to find their quarterback of the future in the 2025 NFL Draft but a recent injury could have massive implications on that attempt.
Currently holding the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, the Giants are behind the Tennessee Titans (No. 1) and Cleveland Browns (No. 2) in the order.
While the Titans are expected to take a quarterback with the top overall pick and a new general manager coming in, the Browns were a bit of a wild card given their contract commitments to Deshaun Watson — even with the Achilles injury that ended his 2024 season prematurely.
However, Watson suffered a setback during his rehab from the torn Achilles this week, rupturing the tendon yet again and putting extreme doubt over his availability for the 2025 season.
That setback could be the final push to give the Browns enough motivation to stay put at No. 2 and take a quarterback, which would be a massive blow to the Giants if they are eyeing Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward.
The Giants aren’t in a position where they need to pigeonhole themselves into drafting a quarterback if the top two options are off the board.
There could be some options like Justin Fields, Sam Darnold or Russell Wilson available in free agency. They also could look to the trade market for a stop-gap option like Kirk Cousins or Derek Carr.
With that said, the regime of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are on their last legs coming off a 14-loss season.
Either way, the recent injury to Watson could put the Giants in a tough spot if they are solely planning on drafting a quarterback with the No. 3 pick.
