Giants predicted to land Chargers $7 million defender to fill big need image

As the offseason begins for the New York Giants, there are several areas of need that need to be addressed.

Finding a franchise quarterback is the top priority for general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, who are coming off a 14-loss season.

Though that may be the biggest objective of the offseason, there are other needs across the roster. Chiefly among them will be the cornerback position.

In a recent prediction from Matt Holder of Bleacher Report, the Giants were named a potential landing spot for Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. in free agency.

“Deonte Banks has struggled during his first two years in the NFL, making cornerback one of the Giants’ top needs this offseason. Even if they opt to rebuild and get younger, targeting Samuel in free agency would be a smart move. He’s one of the top players available at the position and is only 25 years old,” Holder wrote.

It wouldn’t be a shock if the Giants made the cornerback position one of the top priorities behind quarterback.

Samuel, the son of the former New England Patriots cornerback, has had a polarizing start to his career. The former second-round pick has six career interceptions across 50 games (47 starts), but he’s been plagued with injuries during the 2024 campaign — limiting him to just four games played.

He’s coming off the final year of his $7.2 million rookie contract, according to Spotrac.

Still, the Giants have a massive need at cornerback, especially with Banks failing to live up to the first-round pedigree entering his third season.

We’ll see if the Giants are in the market for Samuel coming off a down campaign, but they’re likely to heavily pursue this position in free agency at some level.
