Shaquill Barrett has officially been waived by the Miami Dolphins after his decision to return to the NFL following his shock retirement, making him available to sign for any team from Friday.
The 2019 league leader in sacks, who also registered 10 sacks in 2021 while being a starting caliber player last season had surprisingly opted to retire soon after signing for the Miami Dolphins after leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent. But two weeks ago, Barrett had decided to make a comeback to the league, with the Dolphins intriguingly not choosing to activate him.
But after internal discussions, the Dolphins decided to waive Barrett and let him sign elsewhere, with the team looking set to miss out on the playoffs.
Barrett will be subject to go through the waiver system on Friday, but he will not be claimed due to the NFL’s rules and regulations. This, meaning that he will be able to decide on his own destiny, where he is likely to have offers from several team who will be competing for the Super Bowl.
Barrett is likely to have significant interest from the Detroit Lions, who have lost several players at the position to injuries and are in need of pass-rushing help. Elsewhere, the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills are sure to declare their interest in acquiring Barrett.
The players agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said in a statement: “We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL. Hopefully he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”
Barrett and has family have been few an extremely difficult past two years after they tragically lost their two-year-old daughter, Arrayah, in a drowning accident. Shaquill and his wife, Jordanna, welcomed another daughter, Allanah, to their family 12 months after their loss, while also having three other children in Shaquil Jr, Braylon, and Aaliyah.
Barrett spent the first five years of his career with the Denver Broncos before the second five years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning a Super Bowl with each franchise, and being quarterbacked by two of the greatest of all-time in Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.
