After arriving at NBA media day with elaborate hairstyles for the past few years, Miami Heat star forward Jimmy Butler took a more subdued approach this year.
Butler showed up wearing his usual braids and looking like himself. His flight to Miami was delayed due to mechanical issues and he told reporters, “I’m here. Normal hair. No shenanigans.”

Of course, some fans were left disappointed with his lack of “shenanigans”:

Oh the tradition is over 🙁
Last year, Butler’s arrival as “emo Jimmy” had fans on social media buzzing, as he showed up with straightened hair and a pierced eyebrow. In 2022, he showed up with lengthy locs that had many questioning how quickly his hair grew over the offseason.
Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Butler acted completely professional during media day. He made no issue over not receiving a new contract as he enters the final year of his deal. He didn’t object to Heat owner Pat Riley’s comments that he should do less talking and focus on playing more games. While he was noncommital on his plans for next summer, he said he wants to win in Miami.
Butler hasn’t appeared in 65 or more games in any of his five seasons with the Heat. It seems like he’s approaching the 2024-25 campaign as a “prove it” year, so Miami fans will quickly get over the disappointment of his lack of media day shenanigans if he leads the franchise back to title contention.
