The rapper is trying to clarify where he stands with Diddy

Shawn Carter — better known to the masses as the rapper Jay-Z — is one of the most successful musical artists of his generation. But Carter‘s reputation has taken a significant hit in recent weeks amid a lawsuit that has tied him to Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is facing a mountain of sexual misconduct allegations that could land him in prison for the rest of his life.

Carter and Combs have been sued over the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl in 2000. Carter has strenuously denied the charges and referred to the suit as a blatant attempt at blackmail, making it clear that he is going to fight to clear his name — a “luxury” that Combs doesn’t have, given the breadth of the federal charges (including racketeering and sex trafficking) that have engulfed him.

Carter’s lawyer insists there is no ‘close association’ with Combs

The legal strategy for Carter as he tries to get this case thrown out seems to center on distancing himself from Combs. Attorney Alex Spiro, who is representing Carter in the civil case, kickstarted this strategy in a video uploaded to social media on Monday.

“Mr. Carter has nothing to do with Mr. Combs’ case or Mr. Combs,” Spiro said at Roc Nation HQ in New York City. “They knew each other professionally for a number of years.”

Diddy and Jay-Z emerged as heavyweights of East Coast hip-hop around the same time — in the late 1990s, following the death of the Notorious B.I.G., whom both men have cited as a mentor and an inspiration. Diddy saw two of his albums top the Billboard 200 chart, and he became a sought-after producer amidst the allegations that have dragged him down of late; Jay-Z has seen 14 of his albums top the chart, a record for a solo artist, and he is widely regarded as one of the most influential rappers of all-time.

“Just like in all professions, people know each other,” Spiro added, in reference to the two men’s relationship. “At music awards, they support each other. They go to the NBA All-Star Game, they support each other. That’s just how professions work.”

Combs is facing trial in May 2025 following the latest rejection of his legal team’s proposed bail package. His team has yet to respond to Spiro’s statement, which could turn out to be a victory for Jay-Z.
